There’s nothing wrong with a touch of madness. – Cheshire Cat Someday Hatta will save the kingdom. In his mind, at least. But his talents of uncharacteristic kindness and a passion for colors hardly qualify him for such a destiny. In a kingdom that doesn’t need saving, a young man ignorant of social norms is the unlikeliest of heroes. On the other end of the spectrum is Chism, a young Elite soldier who thrives on conflict. How will this rash, obsessive soldier aid the childlike Hatta in his journey? Along the way, the Cheshire Cat, Queen of Hearts, White Queen, and other familiar characters emerge to fill their eminent roles as well. Witness literature’s most lovable lunatic’s tangled ascent into madness.

Plot and characterization are two of the books strong points. The story begins in media res, so there's no drag time. Open the book to page one, and bam, you're in the middle of an adventure! The plot follows number-focused Chism and color-obsessed Hatta on what appear to be two separate and very different journeys, but fate has a way of interweaving seemingly disparate threads into a single cloth, and connections from the past have a way of reappearing in the present and shaping the future. Ultimately, their world is irrevocably transformed.

Characterization plays a large part in the book's appeal. Chism, a slight but fierce teenager who embodies the heart of a seasoned warrior, maintains a logical head in battle, but he has a volcanic temper that threatens to blow away all the good he's done for himself so far. The author drops a few clues about Chism's background, but we don't find out until later just how harsh his life has been or why he "would never stand by while an innocent was abused by someone who should be a protector." He's noble at heart, deft at hand, and more of a man than most men.

My favorite character is the colorful Hatta. He's witty, charming, likable, socially awkward, and full of whimsy, but he spends too much time in his own head trying to figure out how to act appropriately. He's being pulled toward a heroic destiny but doesn't feel up to the job and says, "Of course, I can’t make any promises because there is a chance I’m mad.” Hatta's an amiable fellow who's never quite sure how to respond when confronted by terseness in others. His innocence and compassion make him an easy character to love.

I haven't read any of Lewis Carroll's work in years, nor have I read "Jabberwocky" by this author. Neither made a difference to my enjoyment of this book, although it's possible I missed some subtle references here and there. After reading Hatter, I'd like to re-read Carroll's books and give "Jabberwocky" a try.

It is very interesting to see how Chism and Hatta developed along different lines from their starting points. I was reminded of the saying "God looks after fools and little children" as I read about Hatta's adventures. Not that Hatta's a "fool"; in many ways, he's the smartest guy around.

It must have been somewhat daunting to tackle this well-loved world, but Coleman does an excellent job. I didn't pay much attention to Carroll's Hatter (as Coleman very correctly points out, not the "Mad Hatter" in Carroll's world), but this book gave a new perspective on the character. I liked him very much.

It was very easy to fall deeply into this world - at one point my husband said "What ARE you reading? You jump every time I speak to you."

The story follows some story-telling tenets of balance (good/bad, fighter/peace-lover) and the quest. My take on it is that the author has a good grasp of "the rules" of storytelling, and this allows him to take some risks, such as writing in another author's world and toying with ideas of sanity and reality.

There is also a fair amount of word-play in this novel, which is appropriate. The author skillfully used words such as "wabe" and "borogrove" in a fairly matter-of-fact manner and making the meaning clear from context. Anders' inventive swearing and Hatta's questions on word meaning play into this, as well.

All in all, it was a lot of fun to read, and I was sorry when it was over.
This was a brilliant work of art! Coleman keeps to the original Carroll style making for a madly wild ride of randomness! I really enjoyed reading about the life of "literature's most lovable lunatic" prior to Alice in Wonderland. It brought a whole new and understandable light to his character and I loved all of Coleman's subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) references or set-ups-for the classic; including characters! I loved spotting parallels in personality or appearance that gave their true "future" role away. (The Cheshire Cat playing a part from the very beginning was genius! Loved the parts with him.)
The writing style was fascinating and I was super happy there was no profanity in the dialogue! D
This really gave me a new perspective on my favorite classic that is actually believable (well, in a Wonderland sort of way ;)) and didn't ruin my taste for any of it- it actually made me want to read Alice in Wonderland again, specifically to read it with this prologue in mind.
